THE GRAND RIDE OF THE ABERNATHY BOYS BACK COVER

In 1910 Bud and Temple Abernathy, ages 6 and 10, saddled horses on their Oklahoma ranch, and set off alone on a trip of more than two thousand miles to shake hands with their family friend, President Theodore Roosevelt in New York City.

They had met the President when he hunted wolves with their father, U.S. Marshal Jack "Catch 'em Alive" Abernathy, in Oklahoma territory. Bud and Temple were attempting the journey to see if they could do it, responding to the pioneering spirit of adventure that was characteristic of the era.

It was a period of great optimism and belief in America, inspired by the dominant political figure of the day, Teddy Roosevelt. It was a time when people were not afraid of challenges, and boys were allowed to test their courage and self-reliance.
